As we’ve said time and time before, the secret to scoring perfect uncrowded waves in the Mentawais is all about when and where you visit.
The key is to visit South Mentawai in the summer season. From mid-April until September this is when surfers visit in higher numbers with more competition in the line up. Visiting in the summer season (shoulder and low season months) provides the kind of conditions you would normally only dream of, while most other Southern Hemisphere surfers prefer to stay home during these months.
During the summer months thru until March long period South swells are common which are optimal for Macaronis, Greenbush, Rags Right, and other nearby classic breaks. During these months, the majority of charter boats normally do not operate while carrying out their annual dry docking maintenance.
From November 15th to December 13th 2024, we’ll be closing down to complete our annual maintenance in readiness for a busy year in 2025, so we’re pretty sure anybody visiting us this December thru to March will be completely stoked with our newly updated facilities and being rewarded with empty line-ups, meaning more perfect waves for you!
Christmas and New Years 2024/2025 are about 50% booked, mainly with families, meaning empty lineups with no charter boats operating. Another great time to visit is our annual Intermediate Surf Coaching Clinics being held January 10th – March 7th 2025. As of mid November we still have less than ten rooms booked for the first 4 weeks, while the last 3 weeks in February are nearly fully booked! Our surf coaching clinics have been run annually since 2018 and come highly recommended, this year achieving 4.9 stars in our customer surveys from 30 respondents, check our 2024 guest reviews here.

What our Summer Guest had to say
For ‘off-season’, the waves were surprisingly good. Head high most days with a couple of bigger days. It was often glassy and super nice conditions with little to no crowds. All the staff were friendly and lovely, and the coaching was super helpful and allowed us to improve our surfing.
Plenty of head-high plus waves in the off-season. There were several super uncrowded sessions. Amazing, caring staff who all remember your name from the first day. It is such an awesome coaching clinic that really wants to help you improve. It’s hard to get here, but it’s worth the trek.
This past week has been so sick. I have caught the best waves of my life, and I have made memories along the way. I just wanna say thanks to the surf coaches, staff and all the surfers staying for making it the best week! Everyone is super friendly, and I can’t wait to be back again! See you guys soon.
I dreamed about this trip my entire life. The wave, the island, the landscape. It was way beyond my expectations. The staff is so respectful, good-natured, and kind. I have no words to thank you all.
